a hot mess

over the weekend david left his hot tamales on the coffee table. we went out and came back an hour later to a hot tamale mess. jack had dumped the contents of the box all over the room. he also decided to shred part of the box into some confetti just to celebrate the occasion.

now jack doesn't really know what to do with hot tamales. he doesn't eat them. he kind of just nibbles on them and licks them like crazy. and it looked like he licked every single one because they had melted into the carpet. so after picking up a bunch of sticky hot tamales, we had to scrub the red hot tamale juices out of the carpet.

jack has a routine when it comes to being caught. when you open the door and he's not his usual excited self, you know he did something bad. the second your eyes meet the disaster he created when you were gone, he shrinks into the ground. his tail goes between his legs (or does what the nub of a tail does when it tries to go between his legs) and his ears get glued to his head. then as you approach the disaster, in this case the hot tamales, he goes and hides. sometimes in the closet, sometimes in the kitchen and sometimes under the bar stools. which really isn't hiding at all. then after the mess has been cleaned up, he slowly approaches you. still staying low to the ground (almost like an army crawl). he stops every so often to look at you, testing the waters to see if you're still mad. when he finally reaches you, he rolls over, like he's surrendering or something.

this whole process is hilarious so it's really hard to stay mad at him. i usually pick him up and put him in the bathroom, like a "time out" while i clean the mess up so he knows i mean business. it's mostly so i don't cave and laugh at him.

i wasn't sure how things would go for jack on his first day of doggy play group. so when i got this text i was very relieved:

"jack had a great time on the walk. did well in the car sitting up front in the passenger seat. made fast friends, especially with a pup named bruno & played well. he pooped and peed & really seemed to enjoy it. yay!!!"

school starts tomorrow

and i hate starting new things. it always makes me nervous. i probably won't be able to sleep tonight. i can never sleep the night before the first day of school. at BYU we didn't get much of a break between semesters and i always hated it. i would head back to school while all my friends stayed at home. but now, with this month off, i've turned into a lazy sloth. one that sleeps a lot. i was kind of liking it up until i realized that i couldn't keep being a sloth. i have to be the antisloth. what would the opposite of a sloth be? i'm taking on three classes all while working full time. i've never done that. so this should be interesting.

let me preface this story by telling you that i hate birds. HATE. birds.

when i was in first or second grade we bought a bird. a green parakeet. named piki (meaning one bird in japanese...good thing there aren't very many japanese people living in new jersey). now piki was special. he was crippled. yes we had a crippled bird (not actually sure why my parents bought a crippled bird). so one day we came home and piki had gotten out of the gage (obviously someone left it open. birds don't escape from cages). oh and piki was really bad at flying. basically, he couldn't. so picture the larson family on their hands and knees searching for a crippled bird on the ground like it was some rodent. kind of a traumatic experience.

then a couple years later, guess who found piki dead on the bottom of his cage? that would be me. traumatic.

and both times that a bird got into our house, i was the one that found them. first the giant black bird that came down the chimney and flapped around my parents bedroom. to make it worse, the bird injured itself and got blood on the ceiling. a true crime scene. then a second stupid bird thought it would be a good idea to journey up the dryer outlet in the side of the house. went to grab some socks and instead found a bird. i could keep going on about the birds in my life but lets skip ahead to the bird that entered my life today.

the one that flew into my face. i was waiting for a the bus when bam! i was slapped in the face. thats just what it felt like when a pigeon (ewwwww) decided to side swipe me in the face with its wing. maybe it was blind. or just stupid as i'm beginning to think all birds are as i write this post. of alllll the birds that could have flown into my face, why did it have to be a the dirtiest bird. a pigeon. a rat with wings. it was a face full of disease and dirtiness and grossness.

it's friday. finally. this has been the longest week. today is a beautiful foggy day. i didn't think fog was pretty until i worked on the 34th floor of a building. in conneciticut, the house next door to us has a pond and it makes creepy horror movie fog. but when you're higher than the fog its amazing. and when the sun rises it turns it pink. it's beautiful.

david is headed to sundance today. my mom told me to stop saying when david leaves on my blog. she thinks i could have a stalker. to which i reminded her that i live in a building full of hundreds of people with two locked doors between me and any stalker.

this weekend i am looking forward to finally using my burke williams gift card.

and sleeping. and making this. and maybe these.

when i told david that i wanted to make this new brownie recipe i found he told me i should have married someone who liked chocolate. um, thanks?

jack has two new best friends. his dog walkers. (they kind of have to be best friends. he doesn't have much of a choice). with school starting on monday (ugh) he will need someone to come love him while i'm gone. i will be gone for 12 hours on mondays now and i just couldn't do that to him. so he will be going to play group twice a week. he is going to be in heaven.

so life lately consists of being sick and and sleeping a lot. (only for me)

it's been a great start to the year.

i'm reliving 2007 all over again. unable to eat and barfing (you wanted to know that right?)

i'm also really talented at breaking out in total body rashes and getting hives on my hands.

david has to hold my hands to keep it from spreading to the rest of my body when were not at home.

hives. barfing. rashes. my life.

the barfing seems to be on the down hill. the rashes not so much.

jack's been jack. very understanding of my current situation.

he's okay about taking naps everyday. he's been all about sleeping on a particular pillow of ours.

he's back into playing with dryer sheets and hiding under things. we made a fort which actually scared him.

david's been working. and thats about it.

he's off to sundance this weekend so it will just be me and the dog.

should be a party.

1. i got a job. and it's awesome.

christmas week

we spent christmas in connecticut this year and of course jack came with us.

highlights included...

jack's christmas sweater. i wish it was okay for dogs to wear sweaters all year long.

david got new golf clubs (there was no snow on the ground so he got to try them out)

we got to skype with nick! it was really hard to be home without him.

the furnace started to smoke so the nc fire department came over for a visit.

peter could fit all of life's important possessions in a laundry basket.

i really miss delis. really.

jack never wanted to sit still. he was always running around. (he's still recovering)

he ate a mini snickers bar too.

saw war horse. really cool play. i cried.

jack left taylor presents in the corner of his room. dogs seem to really like pooping up there.

david tried on alyssa's coat and secretly liked it.

while i've been finishing up the semester, david has been working a lot.

he's been so busy that he has to get up at 6:00 am with me (which i am liking).

he's not liking it because he is certainly not going to bed when i am.

i've already killed our tree. surprise surprise. i'm not good at keeping things alive.

yesterday i realized the tree had no water. oops?

i love getting the mail these days. christmas cards make me so happy.

i've been doing lots of shopping and wrapping.

jack likes to come and sit by me while i'm wrapping.

sometimes a little too close (it's hard to wrap when there is a dog in your lap).

i also catch him sucking up the string like it's a noodle.

such a weirdo.

it was fun to see everyone, especially my grandpa.

when he finally came home on sunday night, he was pooped. he had such a fun weekend. i think he misses her.

jack's sick

jack had a little episode of illness on wednesday night. he seemed fine until thursday night. we were both sound asleep and then around 11:00 i woke to the sound of a barfing dog (must be my motherly instincts. ha.). lovely way to be woken up, by the way. the poor pup didn't even move (his head was still resting on his bunny. bunny has unharmed). i cleaned off the bed (the duvet cover was the victim) and checked his bunners. back to sleep we went. At around 3:45 the gagging dog under my blanket woke me up. as i whipped the duvet cover off i thought, ew not IN the bed. luckily, it was just gagging (not sure how lucky that is for pups). david proceeded to sit up, tell me he was really tired, and then lay back down. jack must have been upset because he moved up and slept on my pillow after that. i'm hoping were done with the barfing but we'll see what the weekend holds.

i love going home. 75 stoneleigh will be home until my parents move. i had so much fun being with everyone. we had ping pong tournaments, played a violent pool basketball game, i saw my best friend, david ate some five guys, watched pete's first football game, jack had more than usual 600 sq ft to explore, we got our credit cards canceled on us, i cried and gave lots of hugs. i can't wait to go back.

jack got to go the lake when we were in connecticut! he loved the wind on the boat and got very upset when we had to stop to blow up the tube. he would get so upset when people got off the boat. and when it was davids turn to tube he freaked out and starting crying and leaned over the boat as far as he could without falling in. when i got into swim we finally just gave him a gentle push into the water to stop his whining. he swam straight towards me and decided to keep swimming on top of me. it's hard to stay afloat when you have a flailing 20 pound dog on top of you. after i got out of the water it looked like i had been mauled by a cat. i think jack would be happy to go to the lake any day.

after a year of being in the city, we decided it was time to say goodbye to the car. having it around was more of a pain than anything.

a little part of me was sad (for about half a second) because i've had this car since high school.

we had some good times together.

we went to seminary early in the mornings, we went to forest street on lunches, we snuck out after curfew...and never did anything bad together...

and we only got one ticket together!

the ikea couch was probably the worst purchase we have made while married. i could go on...and on...about how much a hated that couch but i won't. just think long and hard before you buy a couch from ikea.

jacks first death defying act

this little guy decided it was a good idea to run across the street on friday night.

on friday night, jack and i went outside to wait for david to come home.

we ran into a couple of bulldogs, so we started to play.

i took him off his leash (as i have done many times before) so they could play freely and not get tangled up in leashes.

this was all working out fine and dandy until he heard davids scooter (he knows exactly what his sounds like).

i heard it too and went to grab him by the colar.

he ran. and i missed.

of course, david went and parked on the opposite side of the street. just my luck.

so, fearless little jack, went sprinting across the street, so excited to see his daddy.

somehow, our little black dog made it across the street in the dark, without being hit by a car.

but don't worry, i still cried.

the thought of jack being hit by a car was so upsetting. he was fine, but i was not.

i am never taking jack off his leash. ever.

jack loves a good old sock. partly because it makes him feel rebellious, knowing he's not supposed to have them. and party because they are so fun to whip back and forth. he somehow ended up with a pair of davids dress socks yesterday (we still don't know how). he was so happy. so we switched it with a pair that could actually be his. i'm sure he's playing with it right now...

he can't handle the heat

on saturday we went on a walk in marin. it was supposed to be a hike, but it turned into a glorified walk.

that was partially because of my awesome stomach and partially because of jack.

in preparation for our little saturday adventure, we purchased some hiking booties for jack.

i think he felt like a racing dog in them because he was all about sprinting.

he was really enjoying the open space and his booties, but not the heat.

at first he would just stop and sit and wait till i gave him his bowl of water.

then it turned into more of a protest that involved him laying in the dirt.

it was clear he was struggling so we turned around and headed back to the car.

this put jack into a running frenzy. he would just run from shady spot to shady spot, lay down and wait for us to catch up.

the poor pups hasn't experienced anything but the nice and cool san francisco weather.

he just couldn't handle the heat.

i've never seen his tongue hang that far out of his mouth.

a year ago today we packed up our uhaul and left our little blue apartment behind.

we were headed to san francisco.

i was so worried i wouldn't be able to handle living in a city.

(just because i grew up right outside of a major city, did not mean i was qualified in any way)

i'm so glad david talked me into giving it a try because i love it here. we love it here.

sadly, the weekend has come and gone. it was a good one full of lots of good food. david snagged a linen suit from jcrew that was on super sale. reminded ourselves how bad we (but mostly me) are at tennis. had some good eats at ft. mason. watched a really bad movie and a really good movie. scooter-ed without jackets. waited in lines. cuddled with pups (and husband). finished my book.

it was a good weekend.

i'm going to vegas for work this morning. yes, that's right, work. all 22 of us are boarding a plane to vegas to see garth brooks at the wynn. i will be in vegas for 20 hours, all for a concert. it was a birthday surprise for a few people. they just found out about it via the singing elvis impersonator we hired. so here goes a whirlwind trip to sin city with coworkers...should be interesting.

we got back from hawaii yesterday morning. we were greeted by classic san francisco weather. rain and fog.

i don't want to be back in real life. i liked life in hawaii. nothing hard. always warm.

also, i have a nasty sinus infection that i'm trying to ignore. just hoping it cures itself because i'm too tired to go to the doctor.

the home stretch

we're back from connecticut. it was the shortest/fastest/most tiring trip ever.

it felt like the second we got there, we had to turn around and come back.

but now that we're back, it means we're almost in hawaii.

on friday, we will be basking in the hawiian sun and all its burning rays.

i'm sad we have to leave the pups again. i missed him when we were gone.

marley & me was playing on the tv plane and of course i watched it. and of course i balled.

this was the second time i've seen it. i cried harder this time than last time.

i didn't have a dog the first time and now i have jack, whom i'm obsessed with.

i finally got to spend time with david. it was amazing. we hadn't seen each other in day light for quite a while. and it was the first time i wasn't in bed, half asleep. i loved it. he was all mine. no work, no nothing. now i have to give him back to work until friday. so i'm looking forward to a beach and seeing my husband. it should be perfect.

we were able to take a quick family trip to the beach during one of dave's work breaks.

mother nature remembered it was june and decided to give sf some real summer weather.

it was dreamy. if only everyday could be a beach day.

i burned my knees pretty good.

later that night, i was thinking, i'm rubbing aloe on my legs and i'm not even in hawaii yet....oh dear.

oh, and while at the beach, jack got bit by another dog (minor ear bleed) and pooped three times (take that vet, there's a half a pound already).

dave and i didn't see much of each other this week, or this weekend. he's been working a lot. when he's busy like this, we communicate a lot through post its. we leave each other little notes where the other person will see them. this week, one of my notes had a treat underneath it. i went to grab the leash to take jack out, and surprise, gummy bears! i only ate the green and red ones (as i always do) and left the others for david. if you don't see your sig fig very often, i suggest post its. they rock.

tonight we all talked about how taylor's coming home tomorrow. we talked about the welcome home sign and the *mustache.

everyone will be there, except me.

nick is surprising them. they think he's taking a final tomorrow but really, he's taking a red eye home. he gets home just in time. i wish i was on a red eye.

* before taylor left for argentina, somebody told him that he wouldn't even recognize peter when he gets home. to which peter responded, "yeah, i'm going to have a mustache." hence, the fake mustache.

my parents and taylor are supposed to be touring buenos aires right now. but, the parents are stuck in chile and taylor is stuck in buenose aires. the reason: the puyehue volavno in chile has decided to spew volcanic ash. perfect timing.

lets back track to sunday night shall we? on sunday night i find out that my parents were not sitting on a plane, but in the JFK airport hilton (a party i'm sure). the flight was cancelled due to mr. puyehue (it's a male, obviously). they were optimistic they would be able to leave the following morning.

monday morning i check my email. i'm relieved when i don't see an email from my dad. they made it. woohoo! false. they ALMOST made it. with one hour left in their flight (they had made it 9 hours. so close!) to buenos aires they get a dreadful announcement. mr. puyehue was at it again. they had to be diverted to santiago chile. i imagine this is where my mom started to cry.

i get an update from my dad. "one hour before landing in BA we were diverted to santiago chile because of the volcano. mom is falling apart. not sure what is happening now. sitting in a bus in chile being sent to a a hotel for the night. :)" yes, he ended it with a smiley face. how? i'm not sure.

an hour later i get a call from colleen (my dads assistant) calling to give me an update. she told me that she had to call taylor and be the one to tell him that my parents were not coming to pick him up. that made me sad. taylor was in good spirits and told her not to worry about getting them to BA but to just get them back home.

tuesday morning i check me email as i always do when my alarm is beeping and i don't want to get up. i got another update:

"Dear family,

I thought I would update you on our situation in picking up Taylor. Our flight to Argentina was cancelled and delayed a day due to the volcanic cloud that has erupted in southern Chile, closing the airports in Argentina. We boarded a plane yesterday morning with an “all clear” sign and headed to BA. 45 minutes prior to landing in BA the captain came on and told us we had to be diverted to Santiago Chile because the airport had just been closed again. I wont bore you with all the details and painful travel experiences that transpired in the following several hours. Suffice it say that Gayle and I eventually ended up at some dumpy hotel around 10 pm last night in Santiago Chile, where we now sit.

Fortunately, the mission home has been great and we have spoken several times to Taylor. He and his fellow departing missionaries are all sleeping on the floor of the mission office trying to figure out how to leave a country which has closed its airports. It has been chaos for the poor mission. The missionaries, as you would expect, are taking it in stride and all laughing about it….

Where things stand right is that Taylor is likely to board a bus for Santiago, a journey that will take approximately 20 hours. Hopefully that will work and we will be reunited in Chile and then fly home together. AS for Gayle and I we plan to relocate form the lovely Regal Pacific hotel provided courtesy of American Airlines, to the Ritz Carlton and patiently await our son. Oh, by the way, we have no luggage. It is being held captive on flight 955 bound for BA should it ever depart…we will work on that one today too.

We are most grateful that Taylor is safe and well cared for and we will see him soon…somewhere.

about an hour into work i get another email from my dad:

"Latest update….

Perhaps there is reason Gayle and I were sent to Chile!

Taylor is now boarding a bus with 8 other missionaries from his mission all trying to get home. They will do the 20 hour ride across the Andes together and I will meet them all at the bus depot and get them all to the airport in Chile where they will be able to board flights home!

Stay TUNED……"

only my dad can look at things like that. so rather than touring beunos aires, my parents will be touring the ritz and taylor will be touring the andes as much as one can by bus.

we ate lots of food, endured wyoming winds, went on walks and just enjoyed having them around.

jack decided that one of our laptop cords was getting lonely yesterday and gave it a chew. and by chew i mean he destroyed it into tiny little pieces. he must have gotten a shock. it doesn't feel good to put a plugged in charger in your mouth (i know this from personal experience). he had pieces of the cord all stuck in his beard from the frayed wiring. he felt bad, as he usually does when he knows he did something wrong. in fact, he went and sat all the way in the closet when i was picking up the pieces. he gets all sheepish and his tail goes between his legs and his ears lose their perk. he does this weird army crawl thing, trying to stay close to the ground as he inches his way towards you. its like he's testing out the waters to see if you're still mad at him.

we put the gate up whenever he does something bad. he'll be on one side and we'll be on the other. he just sits their quietly until he thinks he's been punished long enough, at which point he begins to cry.

when you see him all ashamed and sad you think he's learned his lesson. be he never does and i don't know why. he could be chewing something right now for all i know. he clearly feels bad every time he does something naughty. it just doesn't stick.

this is luna. she has a ponytail. we like to call her jack's girlfriend. she lives on our floor and we (yes the whole family, not just jack) love her. jack about dies every time he sees her (which isn't as often as he would like). and is about equally excited to see jen, luna's mama. even though they're about the same size, luna dominates. she's always got him pinned. the other day she followed jack into our place and just made herself at home, checking out his digs. we're glad she's our neighbor and glad she loves jack.

jack's been into putting things in piles lately. he even added the pillows from the couch to his pile of toys yesterday. i guess he's claiming them as his now. he's an odd one (but we already knew this).

i am tired. i went to utah for the weekend to spend time with my mom and nick. just because. nick and i had a sleepover and stayed together. i haven't slept in a twin size bed in four years. it reminded me of the dorms. it was nice to escape to warm weather. it was perfect and sunny. i got burned. when my alarm went off at 6:00 am, i didn't want to get up. june is going to be a busy month and i'm already tired. at least there's a beach at the end of it.

oh and i chopped all my hair off.

before i begin the story there is something you should know. jack likes to to sit on us. like he's a child. he will literally sit on your lap or your leg or whatever part of you he wants to sit on. (he once sat on my face like it was no big deal). it looks really funny as i'm sure you can imagine.

SO yesterday, jack and i were sitting on the couch as we usually do at the end of the day. I was on the computer and jack was thoroughly licking his stuffed bunny. jack decided to take a break from giving his bunny a bath, and sit on my arm. he was just chillin, contemplating life. i could still type so i didn't care. but then, my fantasy jcrew shopping (you know, when you fill your cart full of all the things you want but don't buy any of it...just me???) was interrupted by the smell of dog poop. i first thought of our terrible couch becoming even more terrible. i quickly moved the blanket off of me and stood up. the couch was fine but my sleeve was not. i had been pooped on. my poor gassy pup just needed some relief. he just had no idea he was pooping on his mommy. i was lucky enough to be wearing a white shirt during this whole poopy process too. awesome.

i realize i haven't blogged in a week. there is very little to blog about these days. life is pretty boring. i do the same thing every. single. day. i've been working out more with the whole swim suit thing lingering in the back of my mind. sadly, there is still no six pack. i put a swim suit on the fridge to keep myself from aimlessly grazing in the kitchen. for some reason david took it down and it made its way back into my drawer. i don't know what his issue was, it's completely normal to have swimwear in the kitchen. i'm asking that these next 35 days hurry themselves up. i really need sunshine and an alarm that doesn't go off at 6am everyday.

david was in new york over the weekend so it was just jack and me. as i drove away from the airport i was so happy to have jack. we both sat there sad to see him go. but i had a fur ball by my side. i had someone to cuddle with. the bed wasn't completely empty. jack was the best purchase we've made. i'm so glad i have my puppy!

david has started a quest to find the best burrito in the city. david wants to go to a new taqueria every week. that's a lot of mexican food. david could eat mexican food everyday. i cannot. so i hope he finds the best burrito in the city sooner rather than later. we discovered some really tasty salsa at yesterday's stop.

giants vs. rockies

on saturday we got to go to a giants game. one of the partners at work was giving away their seats all week so i totally jumped on the offer because they were playing the rockies. the seats were amazing (and free). best view of a baseball game i've ever had. we were about 10 rows behind home plate. it was in the perfect location. right by the food (we had hot dogs of course). right by the restrooms(....i drank too much coke). right by the exit. we got out of there in seconds. it was really fun. we will definitely have to go again. like david said, when you have seats like this, who cares who the giants are playing.
